Full-length view of a girl—Inuyasha readers know she is Kikyou—dressed in the kimono of a miko and sighting with a bow.
Inuyasha’s point of view: his own clawed hand, holding a darkened Shikon no Tama on its distinctive rosary/chain, his own hair before his face, Kikyou in the distance, the diamond-shaped point of an approaching arrow barely visible.
Inuyasha’s POV of his own hands, upraised to protect himself from the much larger "diamond" of the approaching arrow, his own hair flying forward, the Shikon no Tama on a now-broken chain, with the other triangular "beads" falling off in a trail before him, Kikyou and her bow a shadowy silhouette in the distance.
Just slightly above Inuyasha’s POV: we see his forehead just below us, his outstretched hands and feet, hair flying forward, and an arrow now projecting from his chest.
Inuyasha’s POV: the fletching of the arrow, and Kikyou in the distance (but closer than she seemed in the silhouette).
Inuyasha: K-Kikyou . . .
Inuyasha’s POV: the fletching of the arrow, and his own clawed hands trying to take hold of it.
Inuyasha: Bitch...how dare you...
Legend: Tokyo, 1997. View from overhead of the head and shoulders of a boy in his early teens. He is lying in bed, on a pillow, covers pulled almost to his shoulders. His eyes appear typically Asian—dark, almond-shaped—but his hair is colored in a medium gray wash that we in the know can interpret as an auburn a shade lighter than Jay’s 2-year-old son Jack’s hair was the day we drew this page, although Jack got really scared when we were trying to compare colors and we didn’t drag him over to the computer to check against the color chart. It’s definitely much lighter than the usual Japanese black, but not so light as to be sandy or blonde. The boy stares upward with a serious, rather resigned stare.
Scene in a bathroom: In the mirror, the boy, still in pajama top but now wearing thick, round-framed glasses, is brushing his teeth. Below the mirror is the sink with faucets and running water; on the sink is a contact lens case.
Side view of the boy, now shirtless and wearing a small string of beads (which has been slightly visible below his pajama top in previous panels). He is inserting a contact lens into his eye.
View of the boy dressed in dark pants and buttoning a white shirt.
Breakfast table: the boy, with serious expression, is eating from a bowl with chopsticks. He is now fully dressed in the traditional Japanese schoolboy uniform: black, high-collared tunic jacket with button front. To our left is his father, silver-haired, dignified, black suit, drinking coffee; coffeepot on the table. To our right is his mother, gray-haired, braceleted, wearing a robe and small string of beads. Both parents are bespectacled, Dad’s glasses much thicker than Mom’s (kid takes after Dad...).
Head-and-shoulder of the boy, with serious face, pulling on his backpack.
The boy, now wearing the backpack, grimaces in classic I’m-Too-Big-For-This manner as Mom kisses his cheek.
The boy on his bike—just stopping, actually, his foot is down. Still serious, but smiling a bit—quietly or ruefully amused.
View from just behind the boy: We see the back of his head and his backpack, and what he is smiling at: a pair of young teenaged girls, one with short hair, one with longer hair in a hairband, both, like the boy, still a bit baby-faced, both smiling. Both girls wear Japanese "sailor suit" schoolgirl uniforms: middy blouse, white with dark collar and short dark skirts.
Boy’s POV of the girls.
Short-haired girl: Hi!
Hair-band girl: We know who you’re looking for.
Head-and-shoulders of the girls.
Boy: She here?
Short-haired girl: Uh-huh.
Hair-band girl: She’s over there.
Full-figure shot of a very pretty, very fashionably dressed girl with long, streaming black hair. She wears a backpack, her skirt is extremely short, and she wears huge "loose socks" over dark loafers. She is turned slightly to look back over her shoulder. Surrounding her are four head shots of the boy. In the first, three-quarter view, he looks serious, maybe hesitant. In the second, an over-the-shoulder, he has a longing, "gazing at you from afar" sort of look. In the third, a side shot, he looks just plain discouraged:
In the fourth, a full-face shot, his eyes are beginning to widen and he is beginning to smile, and we see that he is forcing his face into the wide-eyed, innocent smile we are about to see in the next panel, where:
From just behind Kagome’s POV (of course that’s Kagome—look at those tendrils of black hair!) we see the boy approaching, full figure, and from that terribly wide-eyed, innocent, optimistic expression we realize that of course this is the naive yet indefatigable Houjou-kun, Kagome’s would-be suitor.
Houjou-kun: Hey, Higurashi! Wait up!
