Book One: Broken

Page 1

Inuyasha, in half-daemon form, stares forward with a serious, even sad, expression. His right hand is lifted, with index finger pointing backward; over the finger is draped one end of the rosary that carried Kagome’s binding spell; the rosary is broken and many of the beads missing. Behind Inuyasha and to the left stands another figure, a young man with a calm, yet not sad (almost smiling), expression. The young man has long, neatly combed black hair and dark eyes. He wears a white kimono whose sleeves completely cover his presumable folded arms and hands. The kimono is crossed right over left, in the manner of a shroud, but the young man appears to be alive

Legend: The End of the Story . . .

In a hilly landscape with a few trees and shrubs, the Companions—Miroku, Sango, Shippou, Kirara, and Kagome—huddle together in a cluster. Kagome wears her school uniform. On the ground beside her is her bow and a few arrows. Some distance away, toward the foreground, stands a very nicely permed Naraku. Before him kneels Kikyou, who looks nearly unconscious and injured, perhaps beaten up; around her body hovers a single one of her dead-soul youkai. Kikyou is nearly limp and seems to be upright only because Naraku is holding her by the hair, which is gathered in almost a pony tail in his fist at the top of her head. In Naraku’s other hand is the transformed Tetsusaiga—it is huge and, if we could see it in color, red, but less phallic in the picture than it sounds here. On the ground midway between the two kneels Inuyasha, who stares at a small glowing sphere—the Shikon no Tama, of course—which he holds before him in both hands. The jewel’s glow is rather tinted.

Naraku: And so, Inuyasha . . . It comes at last . . .

Panel 2

Closer, full-body view of Inuyasha. He is now looking upward at Naraku, listening.

Panel 3

Close-up side view of Naraku.

Naraku: The moment you’ve waited for all your life . . . At last you hold the Shikon no Tama in your own hands!

Panel 4

Naraku: Do you recall the last time you held it?

Page 3

Panel 1

Montage: Side view close-up of Inuyasha, listening to Naraku; front view close-up of Kikyou, bruised face, with Naraku’s hand holding her hair; behind them, views of a grim Kikyou drawing her bow and a startled-looking Inuyasha turning as he holds the Shikon on its chain.

Naraku: The day you were murdered by Kikyou, its keeper!?

Panel 2

Stylized close-up of Inuyasha, head cocked, listening.

Naraku: What will the half-daemon brat do now? Once, you vowed to Kikyou that you would use the Shikon no Tama to become . . . human . . . and to live your human life with her.

Panel 3

Stylized view of Kikyou, looking hale and hearty—but with her hooded "zombie" eyes—surrounded by two of her dead-soul youkai.

Naraku: Alas, the Kikyou you knew is no more . . . Replaced by this creature of earth and bone . . . animated by vengeance . . .

Panel 4

Close-up view of Kikyou as she is now, bruised, with single dead-soul youkai.

Naraku: Her sham life . . . ebbing away in my hands . . .

Panel 5

Close-up view of Kagome, looking apprehensive.

Naraku: Ah, but now comes the lovely Kagome . . . The child from an unknown realm . . .

Panel 6

Full view of Kagome, kneeling on the ground, looking apprehensive or sad, her right hand forward, left hand behind her..

Naraku: Mysterious and powerful . . . and yet so human and vulnerable.

Panel 7

Close-up view of Kikyou; her eyes have opened, and she glares.

Naraku: No wonder she has replaced Kikyou in your heart . . . Ah! See! Even at death’s door . . . the mere mention of her rival . . . her replacement . . . brings a spark of malice!

Panel 8

Close-up of Inuyasha, listening.

Naraku: What lies did you tell her, Inuyasha? Did you promise to protect her? Promise that your life would be her life?

Page 4

Panel 1

Close-up of Inuyasha, listening. His eyes are wary. We can see the rosary around his shoulders.

Naraku: I am going to kill Kikyou, Inuyasha.

Panel 2

Wide shot that cuts across the page diagonally, with the frame defined in part by the Tetsusaiga in Naraku’s hand. Naraku stands, holding Kikyou by the hair. Her youkai is not to be seen, her eyes are open but almost lifeless

Naraku: Already the dead souls that animate her sham body have begun to desert her.

Panel 3

Head and shoulders of Inuyasha. He is glaring, mouth open; we can see his fangs. The claws of his left hand are raised and he threatens.

Inuyasha: Naraku, you bastard! I think it’s time you had a taste of my claws!

Page 5

Panel 1

Close-up of a calmly smiling Naraku, who holds up the Tetsusaiga

Naraku: Your claws, Inuyasha? Run toward me with those claws. Let’s see how they fare against your own Tetsusaiga.

Panel 2

Head and shoulders of Kagome. She looks upset, maybe angry.

Kagome: Don’t listen to him, Inuyasha!

Panel 3

Close-up of Inuyasha. He looks angry, and we can see his fangs.

Inuyasha: Asshole! When I become human, the Shikon no Tama will be purified and disappear! Your power will be lost!

Panel 4

Close-up Naraku laughing

Naraku: Purified! You fool¡ It’s too late for you to purify the jewel!

Page 6

Panel 1

Close-up of Kikyou, as she was in Urasue’s stronghold, with hooded eyes and vacant expression.

Naraku: The moment you bound yourself to the revivified Kikyou . . .

Panel 2

Medium shot of Kagome in Urasue’s herb bath, hands bound, desperate expression.

Naraku: The moment you spoke the name of the dead creature who hated you . . . and not that of the living woman who needed you . . .

Panel 3

Inset narrative panel

Naraku: Tell him about that moment, Kagome. Were you praying for him to save you?

Panel 4

Side close-up of Inuyasha, looking hopeless.

Inuyasha: No . . . In Urasue’s stronghold . . . so long ago . . . I betrayed Kagome! Then there’s no way . . .

Panel 5

Inset narrative panel

Inuyasha: If only I had not called out Kikyou’s name . . .

Panel 6

Kagome kneeling. The look on her face suggests that Naraku has hit a nerve.

Kagome: Inuyasha . . . It couldn’t be helped . . .

Page 7

Panel 1

Full figure view of Kikyou looking healthy, holding bow; her eyes are narrowed, and she looks angry. This is superimposed over a stylized close-up of Naraku.

Naraku: Will you become human? Then you must betray Kikyou. Kikyou’s life is over. Nothing but your death will appease her malice . . .

Panel 2

Blank panel with text:

Naraku: … the malice that feeds the evil of the Shikon no Tama!

Panel 3

Close-up of Inuyasha, listening.

Naraku: Why not fulfill your true dream, Inuyasha?

Panel 4

Blank panel with text:

Naraku: The dream of power…the dream that brought you to the Shikon jewel in the first place…

Panel 5

Extreme close-up of Inuyasha’s eyes (half-daemon).

Naraku: You, a wretched half-breed, wanted to become fully daemon.

Panel 6

Extreme close-up of Inuyasha’s eyes (fully daemon—entirely dark, with white slit pupils).

Naraku: to claim the power of a great daemon that is your birthright!

Panel 7

Blank panel with text:

Naraku: How could I stand against you then, Inuyasha? Kikyou would be yours again …

Panel 8

Full-figure view of Inuyasha holding hands with Kikyou. Inuyasha appears demonic: "Spock" ears, eyes dark with white pupils, face markings like those of Sesshoumaru, visible fangs. Kikyou is smiling, with hooded eyes.

Naraku: The daemon lord with his beautiful undead mistress by his side. Who could prevail against such power?

Page 8

Panel 1

Full figure view of Kagome, kneeling, her left hand resting on her bow on the ground.

Kagome: Inuyasha, please! Don’t listen to him! Your heart is human! Please! You’ll be destroyed! Don’t use the jewel!

Panel 2

Upper-body view of Naraku, holding the transformed Tetsusaiga.

Naraku: That’s right, half-youkai. Don’t use the jewel. Just stand there and watch me hold your magic sword … the sword you depend on to control your daemon blood.

Panel 3

Text panel.

Naraku: Do you know you’re going to die, Inuyasha? Do you understand that in a moment this daemon-killing sword will cut right through you, its supposed master?

Panel 4

Group view of Miroku, Sango, and Shippou. All look apprehensive.

Naraku: Look at your friends, Inuyasha. Look at the fear on their faces. They know about the monster that hides beneath the half-daemon.

Panel 5

Close-up of Inuyasha, listening.

Naraku: Is your blood beginning to boil yet, Lord Inuyasha?

Page 9

Panel 1

Two stylized head shots of Inuyasha: on top, as a half-daemon, listening to Naraku; his long hair cascades down to outline his head in daemon form, with dark eyes/white pupils, snarling fangs.

Naraku: Without Tetsusaiga to contain it…how many moments before your daemon blood overwhelms your half-human body…and you once again become a mindless monster…blindly feeding on friend and foe alike?

Panel 2

Upper-body view of Kagome, with shocked expression. Her right hand is outstretched.

Naraku: And what will happen when the transformation comes while you hold the power of the Shikon no Tama in your hand?

Kagome: Inuyasha! Quickly! Give me the Shikon no Tama!

Panel 3

Close-up of Inuyasha, with sad expression.

Inuyasha: Kagome…Kagome, I’m sorry…I need the power of the jewel…I swore that I would protect Kikyou…I swore to save her from Naraku…
